Most Used Summer Items

It was love at first whiff with both of The Body Shop fragrances I purchased from their website. White Musk Sun Glow Eau De Toilette is a fresh, light scent with a hint of flower notes. It doesn’t last very long so I carried Pink Grapefruit Body Mist in my handbag for refreshing spritz during the day. It’s a true grapefruit scent – slightly sweet with that bit of bitterness running thru it.

For my face I’ve been using Mac Face and Body foundation which is my 'go to' base every summer. It’s light formula and light coverage but it’s buildable. Despite it lasting pretty well in the hot weather I still have to touch up my makeup during the day due to oiliness of my skin. I really like Kleenex Absorbing Sheets as they leave my skin looking so much better than the sheets with powder. After using those I’ve been spraying Mac Fix+ for some refreshment.

Garnier Roll-on has served lovely cooling purpose for my eyes in the mornings and evenings. I found it really de-puffed my under eyes. I’ve been minimalistic with my makeup in the summer. The less is on the face, the less can melt. Stila Convertible Color (shade Gerbera) has been very handy, well lasting cheek and lip cream. I also became to love Revlon Lip Butters (shades Cupcake & Strawberry Shortcake). They are moisturizing, don’t have to worry too much with the application and they come off of the lips evenly. There is nothing worse than patchy lipstick leftovers.

Favourite Highlighters

Highlighters! Most of us beauty addicts love everything shiny and sparkly and could wear glitter all over on daily basis. As lovely as that idea is unfortunately we can’t really get away with it. Plus when it comes to our faces we’d rather look healthy and glowing than shiny and glittery.

I have tried quite a few highlighters and today I’m showing you my absolute-totally-worth-of-recommending favourites.

Mac Hang Loose Minaralize Blush – when I first saw this I thought someone must be mad to think I will put lilac on my cheeks. It turns out that whoever created this is a genius because in conjunction with pink it looks beautiful. It’s a blush/highlighter that gives that amazing glow especially when the sun hits it. It cannot be overdone. Few times I managed to apply what I thought way too much product(it’s just sooo pretty I couldn’t stop) but it still looked good.

Soap&Glory Glow All Out – this is my subtle sheen savior. You know those days when your skin looks dull and tired and you’re not quite sure how to fix it? Just swipe this goodness on top of your blush, a bit on the bridge of the nose and under the brow. Voila! It will look like radiance from within.

Benefit High Beam – definitely most natural looking highlighter I have tried so far. It’s in liquid form which gives it better lasting power and more blendability. I apply this on top of the foundation (top of the cheekbones) with a foundation brush. It may not be visible at first but throughout the day you will notice how beautiful and radiant your skin looks. It’s definitely one of those ‘no makeup’ makeup items.

Mac Vanilla Pigment – this is such a versatile product. It’s more sparkly than the above products but still day time appropriate. Alhou it can be used as a traditional highlighter (top of cheek bones, bridge of the nose, under the brow) I love to use it in the inner corner of my eyes. Sometimes even when I don’t wear any other eye makeup (by that I mean I just wear mascara :D). Something about the gold and pink sheen that makes the eyes look bright and awake.

How to prevent your makeup from melting

My skin becomes pretty oily during the summer and it’s a challenge to keep my makeup looking nice and fresh all day.
Over the years I have learnt a few things that help to keep it on for a little longer without melting off my face. Here are my tips and I hope you’ll find them helpful.

Bioderma Anti-Shien Fluid, Clarins Daily Energizer Cream, Garnier Skin Sensitive Moisturizer

*Moisturizer – this is an important part for me.
In the morning I make sure to use light mattifying product designated for oily/combo skin type. I currently use Bioderma Sebium Mat which matifies my skin but doesn’t dry it out. It really is a great base for under makeup. I’ve also been using Clarins Daily Energizer Cream which I found has mattifying properties but again isn’t drying at all, it gives my skin refreshing boost in the morning.
My skin needs a bit more moisture during the night but I still don’t want anything heavy. Recently I’ve been using Garnier Skin Sensitive Moisturizer which is really nice. Moisturizes and soothes my skin after a long day, It doesn’t clog the pores; I wake up looking fresh rather than oily.

Pharmaceris Tinted Moisturizer, Mac Face & Body, Nars Sheer Glow, Hakuro H52

*Foundation – I try to pick one with light formula and coverage. The less there is on the face, the less can melt. I use higher coverage if I need it but I stick to one rule no matter what foundation I’m using: Less is more. I apply thinnest layer possible and buff it in with kabuki type brush. Avoid using your fingers because their warmth will encourage the pores to produce more oil. Above are the products I've been loving recently.

Une Breeezy Cheeks Blush, Stila Convetrible Color, Mac Mineralize Skinfinish, Revlon Matte Lipstick, Natural Collection Moisture Shine (this one is on a matte side).

*Make sure to powder! I’ve been loving Mac Mineralize Skinfinish Natural for the summer. It doesn’t take away the dewy finish of the foundation and it has pretty good staying power. Use a puff to dab the powder all over your face. This helps it stick to the skin and stay for longer.
*Use combo cream + powder for everything. Light layer of cream blusher, then powder blusher. Cream/liquid eyeliner, then top it up with same coloured eyeshadow. Just remember to apply all of your cream products first and then you powders, things might end up looking cakey otherwise.
*Primers aren’t always the answer. I personally found them useless no matter what kind or brand I’ve tried. I always feel they just add another unnecessary layer to my routine and do nothing. They work for many people but consider putting it away, investing in mattifying moisturizer instead and see if it works better for you. It surly does for me.
*Use matte lipsticks. These guys are saviors in the hot weather. Far less likely to feather out of your lips than shiny lipstick or lipgloss. I feel a lot better without sticky stuff on my lips in blazing sunshine.
*Stay away from highlighters – I know we all want to look fresh and glowy but oily skin will produce enough sebum to give us just that. We don’t want to add any shine to that.

What I used today

I really wanted to post something today but had no idea what to write about. I was just about to give into ‘no inspiration’ excuse when I thought of this post. I think this could be my random little series where I post about a few products (makeup, skincare, perfume etc) and perhaps other bits like accessories I used on a particular day. Nothing scheduled thou as you know I’m not good at sticking to those.

Let me know if you like the idea :)

1) Avon Far Away Exotic EDP- this is the usual fresh scent I normally tend to go for. Far Away Exotic is quite sweet, heavy and fruity. I don’t know why but something draws me into this scent. When I smell this I think of Morocco with colourful streets, hot sweaty nights and lots of noise. It’s probably because it’s marketed as an Eastern scent but I like to think I came up with it all by myself ;)

2) Clinique Superfit Makeup – there isn’t much I can say about this foundation because it didn’t wow me nor disappoint me. It’s a light water based formula, medium coverage, good staying power. Rather than make me say ‘wow my skin looks awesome’ after applying, I say ‘meah, I look alright’.

3) Sleek Suede Blush – I adore this nude colour. It acts not only like a blush but also a contour on my face. Gives nice warmth to the face and looks very natural. When I don’t know what blush would go with my eye makeup I use this and it always works.

4) Elf quad Day 2 Night – good quality shadows for the price. Not chalky, well pigmented, nicely blending, what else would we want? Purple one is a bit stubborn and needs bit more of a ‘pack it on the brush’ action but other than that it’s a nice little thing.

5) Catrice Ultimate Colour Be Natural! – nude on a peachy side here. None of the ghost lips problems with this little guy.

6) Clinique High Impact Mascara - this is a second time purchase. I love it because it’s not clumpy, not vet, separates the lashes very well and keeps them soft throughout the day.

Soap & Glory Glow All Out

Recently I got into the whole glowy cheek and been on a look out for a powder highlighter. What I wanted was something like my Mac Mineralize Blush in Hang Loose. It’s a perfect combination of a lovely pinky blush and lilac highlight. But because it’s strongly pigmented I can'tt use it over the top of certain blushes.

So now I am hunting for a powder highlight that will give me the glow without the sparkle.

Glow All Out is a first one I decided to try. It’s described as a Luminizing Radiance Face Powder but I would definitely not recommend putting it all over the face. Risk of face looking like a disco ball!
It's a peachy pink shimmer with tiny silver sparkly particles.
It blends very nicely and doesn’t have chunky glitter. It adds radiance to the face and makes me look fresh and well rested. It’s sheer enough to apply on top of a blusher which is what I’ve been looking for.

One minus point is for fading quicker than Hang Loose. It stayed glowy for about 6h which isn’t bad but about 2h less than Mac.
Another minus is for lack of that wow factor when used. This is due to Hang Loose being my very favourite highlighting product and it still impresses me each time I use it.

Overall I really like Glow All Out and will continue to use it. I think £11 is fairly reasonable price for the quality.

My Best and Worst from Elf

Low prices and lots of ravings on blogs managed to lure me into buying from Elf quite a few times. I own few bits from each of their ranges: basic, mineral and studio. Overall studio products are best quality and althou their prices went up a notch, £3.75 is still a bargain for a good blusher. Plus once you order from the website, you will be receiving lots of discount coupons on your email so you can save even more pennies.

There are few things I like and reach for from time to time but they don't stand out for me. You won’t see those in this post ;) What you will see are products I love and use almost on a daily basis and products I truly dislike and not been using at all.

Best:
1) Studio Cream Eyeshadow in Dawn – lovely taupe with sheen. Colour is definitely buildable. It’s not very creamy but thanks to that it doesn’t crease and stays on all day! I wear it on its own or as a base under a powder eyeshadow. It works both ways.
2) Studio Eyebrow Kit in Medium – little bit dark for me (that’s my own fault for not picking up light one!) but works fine applied light handed. I mix powder and wax together with an angled brush and fill out my eyebrows. It keeps them looking groomed but still natural.
3) Mineral Lipstick in Runway Pink – formula is kinda between matte and cream. Stays on the lips for a long time without fading and doesn’t dry them out. I tend to blend it in with my finger, reapply it and blend it again. That way it creates sort of a stain on the lips and stays on even longer. I have two more shades from this range and they’re just as good!
4) Studio Blush in Tickled Pink – creamy, long lasting formula here. It’s not super pigmented but buildable shade. Quite light colour so suitable for light complexion girls. I actually like that it’s not very pigmented because it’s easier to blend by applying 2-3 layers. I always end up with massive blob of colour with strongly pigmented blushes!
5) Studio High Definition Powder – translucent, finely milled finishing powder. I’ve never owned such soft and delicate powder before! It doesn’t take away from dewiness of foundation and keeps the shine at bay. Looks white and scary but doesn’t leave any colour on the skin.

Worst:
1) Six pc. Eyeshadow in Smoky – shadows are dry and very hard to blend. Pigmentation isn’t bad but glitter goes absolutely everywhere but it doesn’t stick to the lid. I’ve tried using it a few times and gave up. Not worth the effort for £3.50. In fact it’s not worth the £3.50.
2) Brightening eyeliner – way too hard for me. I need soft and blend able liners and this isn’t it.
3) Super Glossy Lip Shine in Malt Shake – the reason I’m disappointed in this is because the colour is NOWHERE near the one showed on the website. Picture shows pretty pink and I got brown and I don’t do brown lips. Shame because lip gloss itself is really nice – thick, pigmented and not too sticky.
4) Clarifying Pressed Powder – very drying and looks powdery on the face. Not much pigment in there either.
5) All Over Color Stick in Lilac Petal – glittery and difficult to blend. Looks very unnatural plus it disappears from the face after 5 seconds.

Considering how much stuff I bought from ELF five disappointments is not much at all! And for such a low price I really don’t mind trying stuff out.

Concealer collection

How many concealers is too many concealers?

I can’t answer this question but I do like to have a choice when it comes to concealers. That’s not because I love makeup and like to have a little browse in vanity each morning. It’s because each concealer have a different staying power, tone or consistency.

I’d use heavy duty concealer when I’ve got a long day ahead of me or I’d use concealer with dry formulation if my skin feels oily and so on and so on.
No matter what your concealer formula preference is, always remember to stick to certain colour tone coordination. That is using pinky toned concealer to counteract purple (under eye area) and yellow toned concealer for counteract redness (spots, broken capillaries etc.).
I would also recommend using something a bit more moisturizing under the eyes since that’s where we get crow’s feet and we don’t want to help the skin get dry there.

Here are my concealers:

1) Benefit Stick it – it’s very creamy and has a good coverage. Since its yellow toned I use it on spots and around my nose area. I didn’t find it drying and it stays on pretty well throughout the day.

2) Catrice Re-Touch Light Reflecting – I picked this up in light pinky shade to use it under my eyes. It’s quite thick but easy to blend and it quickly sets into the skin. I’d like to add that I don’t really have dark under eye circles (just very slight discolouration) so I use concealer under my eyes more for highlighting purposes. This one is great for doing just that.

3) Mac Studio Finish – great coverage but I find this to dry. I can’t apply it around my nose because my skin tends to get dry around there and this concealer increases the dryness. Perhaps would work better for very oily skin types.

4) Soap&Glory Kick Ass – this one has both pink and yellow toned concealers and translucent powder to set them which is always a bonus. Pink one can be a bit blotchy and doesn’t set as well as the yellow one but overall it’s a good product. I reviewed it here if you’re like to know more about it.

5) Mac Select Cover-up – this is more of a corrector that a concealer so super heavy duty product. Again I picked this up in pinky shade to use under my eyes but I don’t really need that much coverage. If you suffer with dark under eye circles then you should definitely try this! It blends very well and also adds a bit of highlight which is awesome. Stays on very well throughout the day.

6) Garnier Roll-On – not much coverage here. I use this on days when I don’t want to wear full face of makeup but need a fresher looking version of myself. Also works great as an added highlight under the eyes on top of another concealer.

I hope this was somewhat helpful my lovelies. Let me know what concealers are worth trying and if you’ve got any rules you always go by when it comes to using a concealer.
I’ve heard Collection 2000 concealer is meant to be awesome. Need to try that next!

My Basic Make up Routine

You know these mornings when you're just about to do your make up and realize that creativity is still asleep and you just cannot be bothered to faff about with an eye shadow, eyeliner & all that jazz?

Well… I know these mornings very well! When I work early morning shift I have to get up at 4.30 am and that isn’t the time anyone should be asked to get up, leave alone put nice make up on!
On those days I would rather stay in bed 10 more minutes than do nice eye makeup (I love make up but I love sleep more).

Here is what I do to make myself look half decent in 10 to 15 minutes (initially it took me about 20 minutes but I did work on that speed ;) ). I do switch products up but I mostly rely on these in the below picture. When I don’t have much time I need to know things will be easy to apply and everything will look good together.

1) Foundation – get the base right and everything else will look right! I am focusing my time on blending the foundation well so it looks flawless and as natural as possible. I’m using mixture of Mac Studio Sculpt and Clarins Tinted Moisturizer at the moment but I switch my foundations up all the time.

2) Concealer – I use brightening one (Catrice Re-Touch Light Reflecting Concealer) for under the eyes to make me look more awake. For red patches and spots on the face I use yellow based concealer (Mac Studio Finish).

3) Powder – I do tend to get shiny throughout the day so I powder everything with translucent loose powder to prolong the staying power of foundation (NYC Smooth Skin Loose Powder). 

4) Eyebrows – I have done a post on how I do my eyebrows so click here if you’re curious. I use Max factor pencil and Elf Eyeborw Kit.

5) Bronzer – matte bronzer for contouring (Rimmel Sun Shimmer) and shimmery one ( Elf Warm Bronzer) for all over the face for a bit of a glow. I only use shimmery bronzer in the winter because in the summer sunshine picks up all the shiny particles and makes me look too much like a disco ball.

6) Cheeks – I layer two blushes for that bright, awake looking face. I use The Balm Frat Boy on the whole cheek and Mac Hang Loose for the top and apple of my cheeks. Hang Loose has that beautiful sheen and it acts like a highlighter for me.

7) Eyes – I curl the lashes and apply mascara. I really like this thickening 2000 Calorie by Max Factor.

8) Lips – I use something to match my blusher and in this case it’s Sleek Pout Paint in Minx and Sleek Pout Polish in Bare Minimum.

First Day of Spring and First Day without a Jacket

Weather lived up to its expectations yesterday and surprisingly sunshine is still brightening our days today.

This was a big day for me – it was warm enough to go outside without a jacket (lol) I am full of hopes that it will stay so nice outside all the time.

For my casual day I wore Primark blouse which really is cream colour but always looks white in the pictures. It’s very sheer so I have to wear a vest top underneath it. My flats are from H&M and I bought them online with a promotional code for about £5 and had a free delivery with it too so a total bargain. Only thing that worries me with them is the soles. I walk quite heavily and if soles are too thin which happens a lot with cheap flats then my heels hurt a lot! We shall wait and see how they’re performing after a few outings.

For my eyes I applied Sumptuous Olive eyeshadow from Mac all over my lid. This is one of these dual toned colours which look different depending on how you look at it. It created olive tone on my lids and transformed itself into brown shade in the crease. I smudged Revlon Sueded Brown pencil on the top lash line and added 124 lashes by Ardelle. Super quick and easy.

Rest of the face:

*Mac Studio Sculpt and Clarins Tinted Moisturizer mixed together
*Mac Studio Finish concealer
*Sleek Suede blush
*MUA Lip Gloss shade 3

About my eyebrows…

Couple of my readers said how nice my eyebrows are and asked how I maintain them.

Thank you for your lovely comments :)

I don’t really do much to them but I will write about my few simple steps and maybe this will be helpful to someone.

There is just one thing I would like to address before I start and that is eyebrow shapes. Remember that the shape you were born with is the one that suits your face the most. Instead of trying very hard to make it look different, embrace what you’ve got and you’ll save yourself a lot of work.

Onto the routine:

I pluck my eyebrows with tweezers and do it myself at home. I have fast growing eyebrow hair and there is a lot of them too (talking about monobrow here). I would have to see a beautician every week or so to keep it nice. I don’t do waxing because I can’t stand that ‘waiting period’ between treatments. When I see a hair I need to get it out straight away.

Here's what I use:

1) Random tweezers from the drugstore. I don’t own Tweezerman tweezers but will invest in a pair one day. I have heard great things about that brand. Hope it’s not overrated.
2) Max factor eyebrow pencil. Well loved.
3) Elf Eyebrow Kit in Medium (this really is a lot darker than this picture) . This costs £3.50 and comparable to Benefit or Urban Decay kits (so I’ve heard)
4) Inglot 17TL angled eyebrow/eyeliner brush. Thin and soft - perfect for me.

Here's what I do:

This is how my eyebrows look ‘naked’. They were thicker in the past but I over plucked them few years ago when non-existent-super-thin eyebrows were in fashion ha ha

I use little brush that cames with Max Factor eyebrow pencil to brush the hairs down. Using light, small strokes I draw the top shape and fill in the main gaps.

Using angled, soft brush I mix both wax and powder from elf duo and fill in the whole eyebrow. I try to be very gentle with this because this duo is in shade medium which is a bit dark for me.

Ta da!

I never used to do anything to my eyebrows apart from tweezing them. I am really glad I have started to. I think it frames my face and makes me look little bit more grown up.

Lana Del Rey Inspired

I am obsessed with Lana at the moment. I got her album and listen to it every single day. I also have a girl crush on her. Her hair, lips and style – it’s all amazing. I can’t even describe why I like it so much but I do. She is just naturally beautiful and gorgeous.

I attempted Lana Del Ray makeup recreation. It’s all quite amateur but I am happy with the overall result. I love her lips and althou mine will never be this gorgeous (not unless I got for some injections) I can at least rock that nude lipstick.

For eyes I have used Mac Folie eyeshadow all over the lid with minimal blending. Added thin line of Mac Rich Ground Fluidline and Demi Pixies Ardell lashes. They aren’t as thick (and a bit too long) as I would want but it’s the closest thing I had.
I lined and filled my lips with Maybelline Long Lasting Lipliner in Rosewood and applied Catrice Be Natural Lipstick.
For the cheeks I used Sleek Blush in Suede from Nude Collection. I applied it more like a contour and kept the apples of the cheeks clean.

The Naked Truth - Look no 3

Today’s day was (and still is) one of the most miserable days England can deliver. Rain, wind and gray clouds made it dark and sad.

When I was about to do my makeup for 3^rd Naked look I thought I will try to make it bright and awake looking to counteract the horribleness outside. This look is very simple but perfect for those days when you need some help with looking good when really you just want to stay in bed all day.

I mixed two foundations together for this effect. Revlon Photo Ready 007 Cool Beige and Revlon Color Stay 150 Buff. Photo Ready is a bit dark for me and I feel it has too much sparkle, plus it can be a bit dry looking when blended into the skin. Color stay (Normal/Dry skin) on the other hand has a very silky finish and great staying power. These two mixed together are a perfect combination for glowy and fresh looking skin.
For cheeks I used really pretty and girly pink blush from MUA. It makes the face looking awake and healthy.
I didn’t want to make it all too pink and on the lips went for dusty rose lip liner and nude gloss.

Virgin, Sin, Naked, Sidecar, Buck, Half Baked, Smog, Darkhorse, Toasted, Hustle, Creep, Gunmetal.

Now onto the eyes! I applied Sin on the upper lid, it made them look bigger and brighter. In the crease and lower lash line I used Buck and Naked mixed in together. I smudged Whiskey pencil on the upper lash line but made the line really thin because I didn’t want to close up the eye. I also added white pencil on the water line, again for that fresh, awake effect.

Eyes:

*Mac Painterly as a base
*Sin all over the lid
*Naked and Buck in the crease and lower lid
*Max Factor 2000 Calorie mascara

Rest of the face:

*Revlon Photo Ready and Color Stay foundations mixed in together
*Garnier Roll On Anti-Dark Circles in Light ( I haven’t got a big problem with dark circles so this is perfect for me to cover up a bit and highlight the under eyes. If you suffer from dark circles this probably isn’t enough to cover them up)
*Mac Studio Finish concealer NC20
*MUA blush shade 2
*Barry M Natural Dazzle bronzer
*Maybelline Longlasting lip liner in Rosewood
*Sleek Pout Polish in Bare Minimum
*Max factor eyebrow pencil
*Elf eyebrow kit in medium

I also wanted to add this link for a smoky eye option. I created this makeup a while back with Gunmetal eye shadow from Urban Decay Book Of Shadows II. Since this shadow is in Naked palette I thought I will share my previous makeup experiments with you :)
If I was going to create that look now, I would definitely add black eyeliner all over the eye and smudged it with Creep eye shadow.


I hope you enjoyed my Naked miniseries. I really enjoyed playing with the palette and coming up with new looks. Hope it gave you some makeup ideas and inspired you to give those shadows some love :)

The Naked Truth - Look no 2

For a second day with Naked palette I did another neutral day time makeup look. Just like yesterday pictures don’t really show how pretty this looks. I think my camera isn’t that good with focusing on shimmery things and that’s where the problem is. I hope this will give you some ideas anyway and you’ll try this lovely colour combination.

Virgin, Sin, Naked, Sidecar, Buck. Half Baked, Smog, Darkhorse, Toasted, Hustle, Creep, Gunmetal

I forgot to mention something yesterday. Naked and Buck - two matte shades you can find in this palette are great for toning down all the shimmer that this palette gives us. Both of those can be used as a lid colour (I used Naked today) with shimmery shades in the outer corner. Naked can also be a highlight to contrast the shiny lid. Another way to use them is to blend the edges of other shadows on the top lid. I often do that because I have a lot of space between my crease and eyebrow. This not only helps to blend the shadows but also fills the gap in between the crease shadow and highlighter.

Eyes:

*Mac paintpot in Painterly as a base
*Naked on the upper lid

*Lancome Foundation - don't know which foundation this is. A friend gave me a sample and all it says on it 03 Aqua. I looked on the website and there is no foundation with Aqua in the name :( It is a really nice glowy finish and it blends like heaven but it started to shine on me after about 4h. I'd say it's suitable more for dry skin.
